Restorative Dentistry
Dr. Shipmon and Dr. Bell can restore your mouth to optimal health, functionality and appearance using tooth colored fillings, crowns, bridges, implant restorations and dentures. They utilize some of the most advanced materials so your restored teeth look and function like natural teeth.
Composite fillings are white (tooth-colored) fillings that blend with the natural color and consistency of your teeth. These filling materials are designed to recreate the contours and anatomy of your natural teeth so that you can regain normal function and appearance following the removal of any decay or defective restorations from a tooth.
Crowns (caps) are indicated when a tooth needs to be restored but is either too weak or broken down for a filling to suffice. The existing tooth structure is reduced (trimmed down) and the crown is fabricated and fitted over the reduced tooth to both look and function like your natural tooth. Crowns are fabricated with advanced porcelain/ceramic materials so that the final restoration looks exactly like a natural tooth.
Bridges are indicated when there is a tooth missing between two natural teeth. The two natural teeth are fitted with crowns and a prosthetic tooth is attached between the two crowns in order to replace the missing tooth. The resulting restoration can be fabricated with advanced porcelain/ceramic materials so that the bridge mimics natural teeth in both appearance and function.
If the nerve in a tooth becomes affected due to decay or trauma, infection with or without pain may occur. Root canal treatment is indicated when this happens. We work with highly trained and skilled endodontists to diagnose and treat teeth in this condition, enabling your tooth to be saved and your pain to be alleviated.
Veneers are very thin layers of porcelain that are bonded to the surface of the tooth. Modern porcelains allow veneers to be structurally durable, yet highly esthetic. Veneers are especially recommended for stubborn staining, surface inconsistencies and major imperfections like chips and cracks. Veneers may also be used to close gaps between teeth without resorting to braces.
Implants function as prosthetic roots in spaces where a tooth or teeth are missing. The implants are placed by an oral surgeon or periodontist, and the crown is fitted atop the implant in our office. Implants are the ideal restorative solution where there are missing teeth spaces, and may be placed to support single crowns or multi-unit bridges.
Dentures and partial dentures are used to replace multiple missing teeth or completely edentulous (no teeth) arches. Full Dentures are supported by the remaining gums and may be removed at any time by the wearer. Partial dentures are supported and held in placed by the remaining teeth and gums, and may be removed at any time by the wearer.
Custom nightguards are often prescribed for individuals who clench, grind or “brux” their teeth at night while sleeping. Nighttime bruxing is a major cause of significant tooth wear as well as other problems with occlusion (or “bite”) and the jaw joints (TMJ).
The temporamandibular joint (TMJ) is your jaw joint. When you experience pain, discomfort, tenderness or ache in or around this area, it may be due to a TMJ disorder (TMD). Some of the symptoms of TMD include:
- Jaw ache
- Neck pain/strain
- Facial tenderness or pain
- Stiffness in jaw
- Chewing discomfort
- Headaches
- Difficulty opening or closing mouth
- Clicking sound in jaw
